Why your title of your page is important
First of all we need to explain what a title tag is. Simply put if you look right at the top the screen you will see the following words ‘Title tags, why you must get the Title of your page right’ This is the title of the page.
To look at it from a code point of view, right click on the text of the page and select source. You will then be able to see the HTML code for you page. This is how the browser you are using sees the web page and it lets the browser know exactly what goes where on the page.
Towards the top of this text you will see the following code <title> Title tags, why you must get the Title of your page right </title> This tells the browser what the title of the page will be.
Now the way the search engines read your page is by going through this source document and obviously one of the first things that it comes to is the title. The engines place a good amount of weight on the title and the reason should be apparent. The title of the page should bear a great resembalance to the content of page. For example if we were writing about how to optimise your site then you would expect to have lots of content relevant to the topic and obviously the title of the page should reflect this content.
It’s a simple and straightforward concept to grasp and we don’t want to labour the point. It is worth pointing out though that you will see a good number of sites that have only their company name in the title of each page on their site. This does them absolutely no good whatsoever when it comes to telling the search engines what will be contained in the page. If you are looking to optimise your site and attract attention from the search engines you must change the title tags.
An easy way to look at is this way….. if people are searching for you by your company name, take us for example, then they will find us as tempest web design, regardless whether we have any title tags reflecting this. But we are specifically looking for new clients who don’t know us and we really are looking to find new clients searching for web designers on the search engines. Which is why we specifically make our title tags different to our company name.
As we’ve looked at before your keywords are massively important in getting visitors to your site. So if you’ve identified the search string ‘web design Birmingham’ to be valuable to you and you’ve written a page on the topic then you should put these very keywords into the title tag.
Another side benefit of having your title tags to include your keywords is that you’ll find other people link to your site using your title tags in the link. This is good news because search engines look at the words that people link to you with in order to work out what your page is about and how highly to rank you for those terms. This should all help your ranking for those words.
So in short, get your keywords and change your title tags! Get more traffic, after all that’s what your site is there for!
